Working to Build Community and Bring Good Food to Bushwick

ABOUT:

Community.

We are an owner-run food cooperative serving the residents of Bushwick, Brooklyn and beyond. With the support of our owners and non-owners, we are able to provide local and organic foods at affordable prices.

Who We Are

The first meeting of the Bushwick Food Co-op was held in the spring of 2009 by a group of Bushwick neighbors after a conference on urban agriculture at the Bushwick Public Library.  In the spring of 2010, the Co-op began running as a buyer’s club, open only to owners. In February of 2012, the Coop moved into its current space at The Loom, and began operating as a store, open to owners and also to the public.

The Bushwick Food Co-op is incorporated under the New York State Not-for-Profit Cooperative Corporation Law, which means we are a not-for-profit; however, we are not a 501c3, nor are we tax exempt. We are all invested in keeping costs low and working together in order to invest more in our store and build community. Therefore, the more owners and organizers we have, the better the Co-op can run, and the stronger the community is.

Mission

The Bushwick Food Co-op is a community-owned cooperative grocery store that works to increase access to affordable, healthy, and responsibly-produced food in the neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn.

We are a true cooperative, democratically controlled and operated by our owners. As a socially and environmentally-responsible organization, we strive to work with farms and businesses that are local, sustainable, fair-trade, organic and ethical, and to minimize the amount of waste we create by recycling and using products made from recycled materials.

We believe that bringing our neighborhood together around good food and cooperation can strengthen community bonds, promote economic and cultural diversity, and increase overall health in Bushwick.
